Xiamen is a coastal city with a pace that rewards walking, sea air and unhurried meals. For a first stay, separate the mainland and Gulangyu days. Ferry logistics, heat and rain make a tightly packed island-and-city checklist less enjoyable.
Day 1: From the old port to a new creative scene
Use arrival day for Shapowei (沙坡尾), the former harbor where fishing history, small studios and cafes now share the waterfront. The Fujian provincial account of the district is useful context before walking its lanes. Pair the harbor with nearby streets rather than racing to every photo spot, then have dinner around Zhongshan Road or the older center. Our Xiamen city walk supplies map names for a mainland route.
Day 2: Gulangyu with the right ferry
Gulangyu (鼓浪屿) is an island visit, not a quick photo stop. The ferry operator posted another visitor-route schedule adjustment on October 31, 2026, so check the booked departure pier, sailing and identity details close to travel. Choose a heritage-building route or a quieter lane walk rather than pursuing every viewpoint. Keep Shapowei or a mainland museum as the weather backup if sailings change.
Day 3: Jimei or the coast
Go to Jimei for a different Xiamen: the school-town architecture and a meal around Dashe (大社) make a coherent half day. Fujian's 2026 coffee coverage follows this exact mix of Jimei walking and local shacha noodles. If you prefer sea air, use the final day for a coastal stretch instead. Xiamen University access rules can change, so check official notices before making the campus a shortcut.
With only two days, spend one on Gulangyu and one on the mainland. With more time, add a slower food or coastal day rather than trying to visit every beach and viewpoint.
