Destination Guide

Shanghai

Shanghai

Discover Shanghai

A city of contrasts, by design

Use this Shanghai travel guide to plan the Bund, French Concession, neighborhoods, hotels, food, airport transfers, side trips, and first-time visitor logistics.

Shanghai is best understood through its contrasts: the Bund's historic riverfront, Pudong's towers, leafy former concession streets, and working neighborhoods shaped by trade and migration. A good first visit moves between those settings rather than treating the skyline as the entire city.

Two to four days allow time for architecture, food, galleries, and a slower walk beside the Huangpu or Suzhou Creek. The city is also an easy gateway to nearby Jiangnan destinations, but a day trip should not consume the only day reserved for Shanghai itself.

Before you book

The local details.

Decisions that make a visit to Shanghai easier to plan.

01

Keep the Bund, old streets, and a Pudong viewpoint in a walkable or transit-linked sequence; allow for river-crossing time.

02

Check whether a train departs from Hongqiao or Shanghai station and whether an arrival is at Pudong or Hongqiao airport.

03

Reserve a meaningful block for a single theme, such as design, food, or business meetings, instead of treating it as a stop between sights.
